Projects

Spreading hoop love is hard work, but it’s loads of fun! Here’s a few of the ways I’m doing it, together with many other awesome hooper friends in Memphis:

Community Movement Center

My biggest project ever – a lifelong dream to open a cooperative Community Movement Center in one of the many abandoned buildings in downtown or midtown Memphis. Think of it as a Mood Co-Op ~ Movement could mean physical such as hula hooping (of course!), yoga, martial arts, dance, drum circles, cultural/music performances… Or mental movement where community members can teach and take street university classes on how to grow, buy, and prepare healthy foods, make their own website, art, mental health services… Or social movement – a community business incubator, credit union, food co-op, community garden, a space where people can come together to create social change and make our city a better place! Where families and neighbors can participate together. Learn more about my project on Neighborland >

Co-Motion Studio ~ Memphis Community in Motion

Mega Projects Update! I’ve started Phase 1 of my Community Movement Center vision with my friend and hoop sister Adriene Holland of Hooper Troopers. We opened on December 13, 2013 in Crosstown Memphis and are thrilled to share positive recreational movement in the burgeoning Crosstown community!

Co-Motion Studio is committed to awakening the spirit of playful movement in Memphis through hula hooping, dance, and other forms of creative expression. Our movement activities center around physical, mental, emotional, and community movement in a fun and uplifting way. We also support local and glocal artists and women-owned small businesses in our retail space. Come out and play with us sometime!

Hoop Bombs

We’re dropping Hoop Bombs all over town, targeting playgrounds, parks, non-profits, and public green spaces in inner-city Memphis. Learn more and support our project with a donation.

Youth Villages

We volunteer our time to teach weekly hoop classes to the girls in Youth Villages Memphis area residential treatment programs, giving these at-risk teens a healthy way to get exercise, reduce stress, develop coping skills, and improve their self-confidence. We also make and donate handcrafted hoops for use in their recreational therapy program, and help each girl design and make her own hoop to take with her when she leaves the treatment program. The Hooping Life – Memphis Independent Film Screening

We raised $2,007.54 for Youth Villages recreational therapy programs, and had approximately 100 attendees at this entirely community organized and funded screening of The Hooping Life on August 4, 2012. We also had a whole lot of fun!

Race for the Cure 5K Hoop-Walk5K Hoop-Walks

Everything is better with hula hoops, especially a 5K. Why walk for 3.1 miles when you can hoop it! Check out the Events page for upcoming hoop walks you can join us in.

Past Hoop-Walk races include: Race for Grace 2010 & 2011, Cooper-Young 4-miler 2011 & 2013, Race for the Cure 2011, Daffodil Dash 2012, and YV5K 2012 & 2013.
