Who Am I?

HoopStatic is me ~ Chloe ~ hooper, writer, wife, mom, woman of the world (and Memphis, Tennessee). I’ve made it my mission to try to make the world a better place in whatever way I can by being a positive and loving influence on others. Think of me as a hoop missionary, ninja, dragon warrior, priestess of life, purveyor of awesome, or whatever you want to call it.

I’m not perfect though, and my life has never been perfect. I fuck up sometimes and have gone through some very difficult times too (and if you haven’t noticed, I curse like a sailor). If you play with fire, you’re going to get burned sometimes, right? But playing with fire is pretty cool and can be a lot of fun too! I am a fire dragon after all.

Life is a journey and I am constantly learning from my mistakes, moving forward, backwards, and sometimes standing still or starting over on my path, and sometimes leading the way or helping others along when they need a hand, because we’re all on this journey in this world together.

What’s With the Hula Hoops?

I grew up with parents in the music industry, a house full of records, and weekends full of blues festivals, so I’ve always loved music and dancing. I spent a lot of time as a teenager sneaking out of the house working it out on the dance floor, thrashing about with humanity in the mosh pit, and spinning in circles under the stars. Maybe not always the healthiest way to express yourself as a teenager, but that’s part of learning from life’s journey, right?

But then I grew up, got married, got a job, had a kid, became a responsible adult, and eventually stopped going out dancing all the time. Turns out standing still isn’t the best idea either, so the hoop found me at just the right time when I needed it the most. And over time I’ve learned the key to successfully spinning in circles is balance.

Hooping for me is like dancing with a force field around me, which can sometimes come in handy on the dance floor. Hooping is also extremely relaxing and therapeutic for me, in much the same way as yoga, meditation, or riding a bike is, only a lot more fun. And it turns out for hoop mamas it’s also a good way to shed the post-baby pounds, and a great way to dance with your kid! And of course my dad is still my favorite music to hoop to.

I also have some pretty awesome friends who hoop. If you hang out with us long enough some of that awesome will surely rub off on you…

What’s With the Blog?

At the ripe old age of 17, I had a friend who used to tell me I should write a book about my life. Now that I’m 36, and inspired by another friend, I’m finally getting around to Step 1 on this journey ~ writing a blog! Ok so it’s not quite my life-story, but we all have to start somewhere, right?

Ever since I was a child I knew I was a writer. In elementary school it was plays and short stories, in middle school it was journals and notes, and in high-school it was teen-angst poems scribbled at the all-night diner while chain-smoking and guzzling bottomless pots of coffee. I wrote poetry to try to make sense out of what was going on in my world, mostly for myself, but I’ve always liked to share what I write in hopes that someone else will get something out of it too.

So if you do get something out of it, please let me know! And if nobody else besides me ever reads any of this, that’s ok too.

Sometimes other people even like to write about me. Check out my Press page for HoopStatic in the news!

Love it? Hate it? Let me know!
